UBUNTU GOATS PROJECT MANAGER
JOB DESCRIPTION

START-UP PHASE OF NEW UBUNTU GOATS COMMUNITIES

The project manager works as an independant and

  • looks for opportunitis to create New Ubuntu Communities (a Community is a group of 5 people receiving 5 goats on loan)
  • verifies if a community qualifies as a Ubuntu Community. This is based on 2 criteria. The relative distance from other Ubuntu commuities and the experience of the group members with goat herding
  • explains the Ubuntu Goats system to all members of the Community as described in the Ubuntu Goats Loan Agreement
  • enters the name and address of all participating members in the 'Members Register'.
  • selects and buys healthy female West African Dwarf Goats in the local market and negotiate the best possible price
  • registers the purchased goats in the Ubuntu Goats Register and deliver them to the group members
  • sees to it that the goats get their first vaccins and ear tags
  • withdraws funds from the "Ubuntu Support Fund" to:
    • purchase 5 Ubuntu Goats On Loan
    • arrange transportation of the goats to the Community
    • administer vaccinations to the goats.
  • can manage up to 10 Communities.
  • receives 4.000 Dalasi from the "Ubuntu Support Fund" for each new Community start up.

DAILY MANAGEMENT

The project manager

  • oversees the project's progress.
  • visits each Community 4 times a year to monitor births and deaths.
  • ensures compliance of the women with the Ubuntu Goats Loan Agreement
  • assists, gives advise and possibly intervenes if a conflict arrises within the Community
  • manages the annual vaccination of the goats (funded by the "Ubuntu Support Fund").
  • records all pregnancies, births, vaccinations, and deaths in the 'Goats Register'
  • ensures that newly born goats receive an ear tag and first vaccination.
  • collects billy goats after six months and sells them
  • receives a 50% share of the proceeds from each sold billy goat as compensation
  • deposits the remaining 50% of the sale into the "Ubuntu Support Fund".
  • acquires surplus nanny goats from the Community, paying 80% of the goat's market value to the Community
  • uses acquired nanny goats to create new Communities
  • receives, for each surplus nanny goat placed in a new Community, 100% of the market value of a nanny goat from the "Ubuntu Support Fund"
  • records the financial transactions of the "Ubuntu Support Fund" in the 'Financial Register.

SUPERVISION OF THE PROJECT MANAGER BY UBUNTU GOATS

  • The Ubuntu Goats Organisation supervises all the on-site project managers and conducts periodic checks.
  • Failure to fulfill obligations or improper use of the "Ubuntu Support Fund" by a project manager, may result in the project manager losing control of one or all Communities under his supervision.
  • Conversely, with proper management, Communities from other project managers may be added to their supervision, allowing these project managers to supervise more than ten Communities.
